Slavery? In Minnesota? In 2025?!
Yes. Right now, people in prison are legally slaves under Article 1 Section 2 of Minnesota’s Constitution: “There shall be neither slavery nor involuntary servitude in the state other than as punishment for a crime.”
This is neither morally acceptable nor a good investment. Forcing people in prison to work for $0.12/hour may sound like a good punishment, but the cost is high: children, families, and victims are pushed into poverty while taxpayers foot a bill of $60,000 per year, per prisoner.
If you believe in ending slavery in Minnesota, join us on May 17th at the Guthrie Theater for an evening of advocacy, art, and action. Throughout the night, you’ll:
Hear powerful stories from those impacted by the justice system.
Connect with like-minded advocates dedicated to ending slavery.
Experience the justice-impacted art show.
Meet bill sponsors Assistant Majority Leader & Queer Caucus Vice-Chair Senator Clare Oumou Verbeten and POCI Caucus Chair Representative Cedrick Frazier.
Help us reach our goal of raising $300,000 to hire three formerly incarcerated staff members who will advance the movement and fight for the rights of incarcerated people.
Join the movement to replace prison slavery with dignified, minimum-wage employment.
